Koh Phi Phi Island Guide 2026: Everything You Need to Know

Koh Phi Phi is one of Thailand's most photographed places — and one of its most divisive. The limestone cliffs, turquoise water, and Maya Bay are genuinely world-class. The crowds, party noise, and high-season prices are also genuinely real. This guide is for travelers who want both sides honestly: how to get there, where to stay, what to skip, and how to actually enjoy Phi Phi instead of just visiting it.

Quick Verdict

Stay 2 nights minimum. Day-trip from Phuket misses everything Phi Phi is good at — early-morning Maya Bay, viewpoint sunset, calm pre-9am snorkelling. Don't stay in Tonsai Village if noise sensitivity is a concern; book toward Long Beach or the eastern bays for quieter nights.

Koh Phi Phi: The Two Islands Explained

Most travelers don't realize Phi Phi is actually two islands.

Koh Phi Phi Don — Where You Stay

Phi Phi Don is the larger inhabited island where all hotels, restaurants, ferries, and nightlife are located. The shape is a butterfly — two limestone "wings" joined by a narrow sand isthmus where Tonsai Village (the main hub) sits. About 2,500 residents, plus thousands of daily visitors. No cars; everything is walked or accessed by longtail boat.

Koh Phi Phi Leh — Where You Day-Trip

Phi Phi Leh is the smaller uninhabited island just south. It's a national park — no hotels, no permanent residents. This is where Maya Bay (the famous "The Beach" location) is, along with Pileh Lagoon, Loh Samah Bay, and the Viking Cave. You can only visit by tour or chartered longtail. Reservations are now required for Maya Bay (more on this below).

How to Get There — Ferry Routes & Prices

Phi Phi has no airport — every traveler arrives by boat. Three departure points dominate: Phuket, Krabi (Ao Nang), and Koh Lanta. There's also a longer route from Koh Samui via the mainland.

Tickets are widely available at any travel agent in Phuket, Krabi, or Lanta — usually ฿50–100 cheaper than at the pier. Klook and 12Go online prices are competitive and include hotel pickup. Ferries arrive at Tonsai Pier, which charges a ฿20 environmental fee (cash, on disembarkation).

Booking Tip

Book your return ferry the day before, especially in high season (Dec–Feb). Late afternoon return boats sell out first. If you need a connecting onward transfer (to airport, Krabi onward bus), book the combo as a single ticket — much smoother.

Where to Stay on Phi Phi

Phi Phi Don has four main lodging zones. Pick the wrong one and you'll either hate the noise or hate the isolation. Pick the right one and you'll love the island.

Tonsai Village (the main hub)

Where the ferry arrives. Densely packed with hostels, mid-range hotels, restaurants, dive shops, and bars. The convenience is real — everything walkable, all tour operators here. The noise is also real: bars on Tonsai Beach pump music until 2am, and cheap rooms are not soundproofed. Best for travelers who want to be in the action and don't mind noise (or earplugs).

Long Beach (Loh Bagao / Phak Nam side)

15-minute longtail boat from Tonsai (฿100–150) or 30-min walk along the beach trail. Quieter, with a handful of mid-range to upscale resorts directly on a long sandy beach. Some of the best snorkelling on Phi Phi is right offshore — you can swim straight from your hotel. Best for couples and families who want beach + quiet but still want easy access to Tonsai.

Phak Nam Bay / Loh Bagao Bay (eastern bays)

Reached only by longtail boat from Tonsai (15–25 min). These are Phi Phi's "escape" bays — small, calm, with one or two resorts each. Phi Phi Island Village Resort and Zeavola Resort sit here. Premium prices but you wake up to an empty beach. No nightlife, no shops outside the resort. Perfect for honeymoons.

Viewpoint Area (Phi Phi Hill)

A handful of bungalow operations on the hillside leading up to the famous viewpoint. Stunning views, total quiet. Trade-off: 100–200 stairs every time you go down to Tonsai for a meal. Recommended for travelers who plan to spend the day on tours and just sleep cheap.

Hotel Picks by Budget

Budget (under ฿1,200/night)

  • Phi Phi Hostel (Tonsai Village) — Dorm beds ฿400–700, basic but social. Walk to ferry.
  • Up Hill Cottage (Viewpoint area) — Bungalows from ฿800. Million-dollar view, 150-stair commute.
  • Blanco Beach Bar & Bungalows (Long Beach) — Beachfront bungalows from ฿1,000 in low season.

What to Do on Phi Phi

Maya Bay (with reservation)

The famous beach from The Beach reopened to visitors in 2022 after a multi-year closure to let the reef recover. As of 2026, visits are capped daily, swimming in the bay is not allowed, and tour boats anchor at Loh Samah Bay (the back side of the headland) — visitors then walk through a short jungle path to Maya Bay. The whole visit is ~30 minutes.

Best way to do Maya Bay: book the early-morning tour (departing 6:30–7am from Tonsai). You'll arrive before the day-tripper boats from Phuket and have a near-empty beach for 20 minutes. Tours cost ฿1,200–1,800 including park fees, the National Park entry (฿400 for foreigners), and snorkelling stops. Standard tours arrive at 10am+ and the bay is significantly busier.

Phi Phi Viewpoint (sunset hike)

Three viewpoints up the hill behind Tonsai. Viewpoint 1 is a 15-min walk and shows you the iconic shot of the twin bays. Viewpoints 2 and 3 require another 10–15 minutes. Free, no guide needed. Bring water — it's a steep climb. Best at sunset or for sunrise (5:45am). Bring a flashlight if going at dusk; the path back down is dark.

Snorkelling

Phi Phi has good snorkelling but the coral has been damaged by years of tourism. Best snorkelling spots:

  • Bamboo Island — North of Phi Phi Don. Crystal water, healthy coral, white sand. Most tours stop here.
  • Mosquito Island — Smaller, less visited, similar quality to Bamboo. Often combined with Bamboo on tours.
  • Long Beach reef — Just offshore from Long Beach, 50m from shore. Excellent snorkelling that's free, no tour needed.
  • Loh Samah Bay (Phi Phi Leh) — Strong currents but vibrant. Part of most Maya Bay tours.

Diving

Phi Phi is a serious dive destination — visibility 15–30m, lots of dive shops in Tonsai, sites including King Cruiser Wreck, Anemone Reef, and Hin Daeng. Open Water certification courses run ฿11,000–15,000 over 3 days. Half-day fun dives ฿2,500–3,500.

Nightlife

Tonsai Beach turns into a fire-show party scene from 9pm onwards. The most famous bars are Slinky, Carlito's, and Banana Bar. It's loud, alcohol-fueled, and not for everyone — but it's also iconic Phi Phi. If you don't want to participate, just stay away from Tonsai Beach after 9pm and book accommodation in another bay.

Other

  • Pileh Lagoon — Enclosed turquoise bay on Phi Phi Leh. Beautiful but heavily visited; combine with Maya Bay tour.
  • Monkey Beach — Small beach with a resident monkey troop. Don't feed them and watch your bags.
  • Plankton Tour (evening) — Bioluminescent plankton swim. Cheesy but genuinely cool. ฿800–1,200.
  • Rock Climbing — Tonsai has decent limestone routes. Half-day courses ฿1,500–2,000.

Maya Bay Reservation Rules — Do This Right

This is where most travelers get caught out. Since 2022, Thailand's Department of National Parks has restricted Maya Bay to limit damage. Key rules in 2026:

  • Daily visitor cap — approximately 4,125 people per day. High-season days fill up by mid-morning.
  • Time slots — visits run in 1-hour windows from 7am to 4pm. Tour operators book slots; you book through your tour.
  • No swimming inside Maya Bay — visiting only. Snorkelling permitted at Loh Samah on the boat side.
  • National Park fee — ฿400 per foreign adult, payable on entry. Most tours include this; verify before booking.
  • Closures — the bay closes August 1 to September 30 each year for reef recovery. Don't book a Phi Phi trip in August expecting Maya Bay.
How to Beat the Crowds

Book a private longtail charter (฿2,500–3,500 for 4 hours, split among 4–6 people) for a 6:30am departure. You'll be at the Loh Samah anchorage as the gates open at 7am, and have Maya Bay near-empty for 20 minutes before the speedboat groups arrive.

How Many Days on Phi Phi?

1 Night (the minimum sensible stay)

Arrive afternoon, do viewpoint at sunset, dinner in Tonsai, party or sleep, take morning Maya Bay tour, leave on afternoon ferry. You'll see the highlights but feel rushed.

2 Nights (the sweet spot)

Day 1: arrive, beach, viewpoint, dinner. Day 2: full Maya Bay + 4-island tour (8am-4pm), evening at leisure. Day 3: morning swim, late ferry out. This is what we'd recommend for first-time visitors.

3 Nights (best for couples / divers)

Add a dedicated dive day, a private longtail to Bamboo + Mosquito Islands, and proper time at Long Beach or Loh Bagao. The extra day removes all rush from the trip.

4+ Nights (probably too much)

Phi Phi is small. After 4 nights you'll have done everything multiple times and the noise (in Tonsai) starts to wear. If you want a longer beach stay, split the time: 2 nights Phi Phi + 2 nights Koh Lanta works far better.

Practical Tips

  • No cars — bring a wheeled bag only if your hotel is in Tonsai Village. For other areas, soft bags are easier on longtail transfers.
  • Cash matters — many small shops, longtail boats, and beach bars are cash-only. There are 3 ATMs on the island; all charge ฿220 in foreign-card fees. Withdraw on the mainland.
  • Pharmacies are limited — bring any prescription medications, plus motion-sickness pills for the ferry.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen — Maya Bay enforces this (cosmetics with oxybenzone are banned). Bring a clearly-labeled mineral sunscreen or buy one at any dive shop on the island.
  • Bring earplugs if staying in Tonsai. Even mid-range hotels have thin walls and the bars run until 2am.
  • Watch boats arriving / leaving — Tonsai Pier is shallow; ferries do "wet landings" in waves. Wear shoes you can soak.
  • Don't feed the monkeys at Monkey Beach. They bite and rabies risk is real (uncommon but documented).
